What Is Border Tolerance, And How Does It Impact Your Labels?

If you're keen for your labels to have a border, we have some helpful tips to get the best result!

Planning a label artwork that includes a border? We have some advice that you're definitely going to want to hear to make sure you get the best result possible!

When it comes to manufacturing labels, there is a degree of variation to be expected on the precision of the die cutting. Our accepted tolerance is 0.5mm - A tiny variance! However, if you throw in the variable of a border around the edge of your labels, this small variance can look much more obvious than it is and negatively impact your end result. Luckily there is an easy solution for this that can be made at the artwork design stage!

If you wish to incorporate a border into your label artwork, we advise that you make it thicker. Border thickness is important because if a border is too thin it may look obviously uneven
after cutting. This is especially important for smaller labels, as the shift in cutting tolerance will be more likely and more noticeable.

However, no matter your label size our advice is - The thicker the border, the better the result!

Our key recommendations are:

  • Borders within the label work should be moved inwards to be at least 4mm away from
    each edge.
  • Borders on the edge of the artwork should be thickened up to be at least 3mm wide.

If you take our advice, your label artwork borders will be well optimised for the manufacturing process! Do you have other label design or manufacturing issues you'd like to work through? Reach out to us for a chat, our team are here to help make your labelling easy!
