Should I perforate my labels or not?

Perforation can give your labels greater flexibility - Let's take a closer look at how it could help you!

There are a wide variety of features and customisations that you can make to your labels to make them best suit their purpose. Being aware of what's possible ensures you get the best results from your labels, and can maximise your opportunity to save time and hassle on processes relating to label use within your business!

One of these features that can be added to your labels is perforation, which involves scoring tear off lines between individual labels. These tear lines can be through the backing paper, face material, or through both depending on your requirements. Perforation gives you greater flexibility with your labels in a number of ways - Let's take a closer look at some situations where it is useful!

1. Perforation allows you to easily and quickly move your labels prior to application. It's a great choice if you are using your labels in a production setting where the labels are applied some distance from where they are printed or stored. This is because they're able to be torn off individually or in batches as required, without remaining adhered to the backing paper.

2. Perforation makes your labels easy to tear off directly from a desktop label printer, preventing adhesive from getting snagged on the printer roller. So if you overprint your labels, it may benefit you.

3. Perforation enables you to store your labels in a folded stack if required. Depending on your warehouse set up, this may be useful to prevent label rolls form being crushed or to allow for storage prior to use across multiple areas.

4. Perforation gives you the flexibility to also use your labels as non-adhesive tags if required, as the backing paper can remain adhered while individual labels are detached from the roll. This can be a cost effective solution if you would require both labels and tags within your business.

However it's important to note, perforation is not a good choice if your labels are destined to be use in an automatic label applicator. This is because perforation weakens the backing paper, which will cause it to snap in the applicator.
