What finishing options can I get on my labels to make them more durable?

When having labels manufactured, a key concern is often the durability of those labels. If your labels are being used outdoors for long periods of time, if they will be in contact with chemicals or will be submerged in liquid for a long period, you may need to include a protective coating. There are a variety of options available to give your labels the extra durability they need. 

Laminates
A laminate is a clear film applied over the top of your labels. It acts as a protective barrier, while also giving your labels a thicker look and feel. Laminates are available in both gloss finish and matte finish, and they will protect your labels against moisture, chemical damage or ingress, and even from fading in direct sunlight.

A downside to lamination is that the added thickness it gives labels can be a hinderance for machine label application.Also the extra rigidity that a laminate adds can mean your label does not stick to curved surfaces- the laminate can cause the label to straighten out and peel.

Varnishes
A varnish is a clear layer of of ink applied to your labels in the manufacturing stage. This coating is much thinner than a laminate so it offers less protection but in some instances it is a good barrier to prevent scuffing or scratching of the printed area. Varnishes are also used aesthetically to add more of a gloss or matte finish to your labels.

UV Coatings
A UV coating is a form of laminate that is specially designed to filter sunlight to the printed area of your labels, therefore extending the outdoor useability of your labels. It's a more expensive option than a standard laminate or varnish, however it provides a super glossy look, and the protective shield guards your labels against fading.
