What are the different label backing material options?

The term 'backing paper' is usually used to describe the substrate that self-adhesive labels are supplied on.  It is also often referred to as liner or carrier film.  This backing material not only stores your labels until you're ready to use them, it also protects the adhesive - without them, die cut labels would not be viable. Choosing the right backing material for your labels will ensure ease of application, and depends on factors such as the strength required or if clarity of the backing is a priority. There are two types of backing materials available, paper and film.

Paper:
These are generally Glassine or Kraft based, and come in a variety of colours and weights. They are designed not to snap when they are put under strain, such as when they are being wound through a label applicator. To enable easy separation of label and backing paper, they have a silicone coating on the upper side closest to the label. Paper backing materials are a cost effective option suitable for many standard applications.

Film:
If your labels are destined for a high speed applicator or a demanding packaging line, a film backing material is the ideal choice due to their enhanced strength. These can be made from either polyester (PET) or polypropylene (PP), and are transparent. They are smoother than paper backing materials, which makes them a great choice for clear labelling applications as the label adhesive will be kept smoother for application. This allows for optimum clarity, and a seamless appearance when applied. Film backing materials are a more expensive option, given their higher strength and superior smoothness.
