# Case Study | Donor Blood Bag Labels

Designing and delivering a compliant label for donor blood bags — built to perform in the most demanding conditions.

**When the margin for error is zero, materials matter. For this application, Cohesion engineered a labelling solution for donor blood bags, where adhesion isn't just performance, it's compliance.**

At Cohesion, we solve the problems that bring others unstuck. Recently, we partnered with a healthcare provider facing a critical supply issue — their existing supplier could no longer guarantee continuity of donor blood bag labels. In an environment where interruption isn't a option, they needed certainty. Fast.

**The Challenge**

Working within tightly controlled regulatory requirements, we were tasked with solving a complex, real-world challenge: how to deliver a specialised multi-layer label that reliably adheres to a damp, flexible surface, meets strict regulatory requirements, and is produced within a tight deadline, without compromising safety, integrity, or compliance.

The label needed to:

- Be approved for direct adhesion to blood bags without contamination risk
- Maintain secure adhesion across cold, damp, and flexible surfaces
- Be constructed as a multi-layer label, allowing sections to be peeled and applied to supporting documentation

**Why It Matters**

In Australia, blood donor bag labels are critical to patient safety, traceability, and regulatory compliance. These labels must remain securely attached and fully legible under all storage conditions. Each label carries essential information, including:

- Donation Identification Number (DIN)
- Blood group (ABO/RhD)
- Component type (e.g. red cells, platelets)
- Expiry date and time
- Special processing details

Failure isn't just inconvenient — it can compromise transfusion safety or render life-saving products unusable.

All storage and handling must comply with AS3864, reinforcing the need for absolute reliability at every stage.

**The Execution**

Our team moved quickly to identify a compliant, reliable solution, starting with material selection.

Given the strict regulatory requirements, the available adhesive options were limited. Rather than relying on assumptions, we worked directly with the end-use conditions. The customer provided donor blood bag samples, allowing us to test performance on the exact substrate the labels would be applied to. This was critical.

Testing was conducted under real-world conditions to ensure:

- Consistent adhesion to a damp, flexible surface
- No compromise to the integrity of the blood bag
- Reliable performance across cold storage environments
- Clean peel functionality for the multi-layer construction

Through this process, we identified a compliant raw material sourced from Europe that met the required specifications. Due to the urgency of the situation, the initial material was air-freighted as an urgent order to Australia, allowing production to commence without delay.

To ensure long-term reliability, we implemented a forward ordering system that:

- Secures raw material supply in advance
- Holds finished label stock on behalf of the customer
- Maintains a continuous pipeline of material on order and in transit

This approach reduced future raw material lead times from approximately six weeks to a significantly shorter turnaround, removing the risk of supply disruption entirely — and showcasing our commitment to being the strongest link in our customers supply chain.

**The Outcome**

Through rigorous testing and careful material selection, we delivered a labelling solution that met the strict performance and compliance requirements of this application. Importantly, we achieved this whilst giving the customer confidence in a reliable, ongoing supply:

- Proven performance under real-world storage and handling conditions
- A secured supply chain, with material held and managed accordingly to suit their needs
- Reduced lead times and confidence in ongoing availability

In an environment where failure isn't an option, reliability is everything. By combining technical expertise with proactive supply management, Cohesion was able to remove risk, simplify the process, and ensure continuity where it matters most. ![6-1](https://blog.cohesionlabels.com.au/hs-fs/hubfs/6-1.png?width=172&height=243&name=6-1.png)
