Plastic drums, also referred to as polyethylene drums, are industrial-grade containers constructed using high-density polyethylene (HDPE). They are commonly used for shipping chemicals (for example, petroleum, flammable solvents, alcohol, or paint) as they are light weight and more cost-effective than their steel counterparts. However, when it comes to labelling these mainstays of commercial chemical storage, there are requirements that must be followed to to ensure your labels are suitable.
ADHESIVE
Plastic drums can prove difficult to adhere a label to. Their rough surface and HDPE composite presents a difficult combination when trying to find a label that will apply. An adhesive that has a high initial tack and also a higher than usual ultimate adhesion level is recommended, as this ensures a quick and tight bond.
It's also important to consider the temperature that your drums will be exposed to so that your label manufacturer can select the appropriate adhesive. If your drums will be exposed to freezing temperatures at any point, freezer-grade adhesive must be used. Plastic drums are required to have a warning label that isn't removed until the drum is empty, so it's vital that your label adhesive is suited to the conditions your drums will be exposed to.
LABEL MATERIALS:
When labelling plastic drums, paper labels are not suitable as they won't stand up to wear and tear or chemical exposure. Synthetic labels are recommended instead. Some examples of popular synthetic HDPE drum label materials include:
Polyester: Among the most durable label materials available, however it is also more expensive than most. If you need labels that are weather, puncture, or abrasion resistant and able to withstand extreme conditions, this is the material of choice.
Polypropylene: Considerably less expensive than polyester, but it is durable, moisture resistant and tear proof.
Vinyl: One of the best label stocks for rough surfaces and extreme weather conditions. It is more flexible compared to other materials, so is suitable for rounded surfaces. However it is often supplied in sheets rather than rolls, so may not be suitable for larger quantity applications.
LABEL PRINT:
The last factor to consider when labelling HDPE drums is the method and quality of your print. Suitable print methods include flexographic, offset, digital, screen and thermal transfer printing. However some of these methods are suitable for only short-term outdoor use so it is important to determine if your label is required for long-term (usually more than a year) outdoor use first. For most chemical labels, a protective laminate coating is recommended to protect the print from any chemical spills which may make the label illegible. For any variable data printed on the label (batch numbers, expiry dates..etc) thermal transfer or inkjet are the recommended methods rather than direct thermal as direct thermal will not last in outdoor conditions.
